Ugh, it's time. Ava is just way too interested in potty training for me to put her off any longer. Oh, and in case you are wondering, no, you did not just step into a game of "Which one of these things is not like the other?" a la Sesame Street - the wine is for me because I am going to need it.
I've gathered my supplies: a potty seat for going on the regular toilet in her bathroom (Ava & Oliver share a "Jack & Jill bathroom"), a regular potty for the main floor, 5 pairs of Mother Ease training pants (I suspect I'm going to be doing a lot of laundry) and a "Stress-Free Potty Training" book. I haven't cracked open the book yet. I'll thumb through it tonight but odds are that I'll probably be cracking open the wine before the book.
At first, I thought about starting by getting some pull-ups, but so so many people, including Ava's teachers at school, told me this was a big mistake because it's "confusing" for kids basically because pull-ups "feel" like going in a diaper and it's confusing for kids because it's ok to go in a diaper but not in a pull-up. (This is just way I've heard by the way. If your child was fully potty trained using pull-ups and it worked great for you, then more power to ya!)
Also, after worrying about the potential mess from just starting with regular underwear, I decided to try using Mother Ease Training Pants. They are washable, more able than regular underwear to catch messes and when soiled, it's a very different sensation for a child than a regular diaper.
I bought 5 pairs because at $13.50/each, they are a little expensive for something that will (hopefully) be used for such a short period of time. I bought size small for kids 20-30lbs and in all gender neutral prints like Wetlands, Oceans and Savanna so hopefully Oliver can use them too. Ava's smack in the middle at 25lbs and these are still really big on her.
The plan is basically to spend most of the weekend at home with Ava in her "big girl underpants" and ask her about a million times a day if she needs to go potty. No wonder I'll need the wine.
I may need some encouragement here and I'll let you know how it goes next week!
